Poverty Issues

The Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean, boasts tropical beauty and cultural richness. Challenges include unequal access to education and healthcare. Approximately 21% of the population experiences poverty, underscoring the importance of projects to uplift marginalized communities and promote sustainable development.

How We Help

In the Dominican Republic, our work is focused on supporting Lighthouse Projects, an organization committed to empowering marginalized communities through sustainable development. By addressing critical needs such as education, healthcare, and access to clean water, we help bring lasting change and renewed hope to areas where resources and infrastructure are limited.

Transforming Communities with Clean Water

One of Lighthouse Projects’ landmark initiatives is the water purification plant in Villa Altagracia, which now provides safe drinking water to 12,800 people every day. This project not only resolves a critical water shortage but also serves as a symbol of resilience and progress for the community. By investing in essential infrastructure like this, our partnership ensures that communities can thrive physically, economically, and socially.

Healthcare and Volunteer Engagement for Lasting Impact

Lighthouse Projects is also constructing a medical clinic to provide essential healthcare services to the local population, a project nearing completion thanks to generous support. Complementing these efforts are the annual Impact Teams, which bring Canadian volunteers to serve in educational programs and community development projects. These hands-on experiences strengthen local initiatives, foster cross-cultural understanding, and play a pivotal role in shaping a brighter, healthier future for the Dominican Republic.

Impact Story

Our partners in the Dominican Republic have been actively transforming the community of Villa Altagracia. Following the installation of a water purification system, residents have developed a strong sense of unity. A significant milestone is the community’s collective decision to donate land for a vital medical facility. The First Attention Clinic is now under construction and will soon provide essential healthcare services to everyone in Villa Altagracia.

This initiative received active support from key figures, including the neighborhood association and the town’s mayor. When the search for a suitable property for the clinic began, the community quickly united to offer the necessary land. This generous gesture highlights the trust and confidence the community places in Lighthouse Projects and their ongoing efforts to improve local wellbeing.
