Haiti, in the Caribbean, grapples with challenges like political instability and natural disasters. Issues of poverty, inadequate healthcare, and education persist, with approximately 58% of the population experiencing economic hardship. Comprehensive strategies and international support are crucial for sustainable development and resilience.
Our work in Haiti focuses on empowering local church leaders through transformative, justice-centered education that strengthens both their ministries and the communities they serve. By partnering with dedicated organizations and investing in holistic leadership development, we help equip emerging pastors and leaders with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundations needed to create sustainable, community-driven change across the country.
Micah Scholars: Forming Justice-Driven Leaders
At the heart of our efforts is the Micah Scholars program, a groundbreaking initiative that provides full scholarships for Bachelor of Divinity degrees. Rooted in Micah 6:8, the program goes beyond academic training by cultivating leaders deeply committed to justice for children, women, and the environment. Through monthly workshops and international retreats, participants gain vital leadership skills, broaden their perspectives, and become catalysts for transformation in their churches and communities.
Graduate Programs for Sustainable Community Transformation
Our collaboration with Development Associates International (DAI) expands these efforts by offering graduate-level programs, including a Masters in Organizational Leadership. This initiative addresses the historical trauma and scarcity mindset present in many communities by equipping emerging leaders with advanced tools for strategic, ethical, and compassionate leadership. By investing in local leaders at this level—and stepping in to support communities during times of crisis—we help build long-term resilience and empower Haitians to drive meaningful, self-sustaining change throughout the nation.
At 53 years old, Roselène is a coffee seller living in Léogane’s Dampus locality. Despite the difficult national situation, her community remains important to her because of the many bus stations near her home. However, on June 3rd, severe flooding devastated the area, destroying the bus station and disrupting life for residents. Many traders lost their livelihoods, and Roselène herself suffered greatly, losing both her home and her goods as the floodwaters swept them away. The aftermath left the community in chaos and facing a food shortage.
Amid these hardships, Roselène expresses deep gratitude to FOKA-DAI-Haiti, which, with the financial support of iTeams Canada, organized a cash distribution. This assistance has given hope to the community and allowed Roselène to restart her coffee-selling business each morning, helping her begin rebuilding her life.
